Welcome Dr. Juárez

Welcome to Dr Jennifer Hernández Juárez, who has been appointed to the laboratory as a new post-doctoral researcher.  She brings with her experience in genetics and cell culture to drive the gene-editing projects aiming to develop translational treatments for inherited Macular Degenerations.

Potential Imaging Biomarkers

New Paper accepted entitled

Quantifying the Separation Between the Retinal Pigment Epithelium and Bruch’s Membrane using Optical Coherence Tomography in Patients with Inherited Macular Degeneration.’

The paper, accepted in the journal Translational Vision Science & Technology studies potential imaging biomarkers the inherited macular degenerations Sorsby fundus dystrophy, Dominant drusen and late-onset retinal degeneration.

Congratulations

Congrats Dr. Borooah

Congratulations to Dr. Shyamanga Borooah, for his Knights Templar award for his project entitled ‘Defining the role of LAMP2 in retinopathy associated with Danon disease’.  Danon disease is life and sight-threatening systemic disease results from mutations in the gene LAMP2. This study will use a stem cell model of Danon disease to identify where LAMP2 is expressed in the eye.  Then Dr. Borooah will use gene therapy to test a translational treatment approach to treat vision problems found in Danon disease. The work is in close collaboration with Dr. Eric Adler, Professor of Cardiology, who has spent most of his career working with patients with Danon disease.

Congrats Dr. Kumari

Congratulations to Dr Asha Kumari, Post-doctoral scholar in the lab gained a prestigious ARVO travel prize at her first attempt for her presentation entitled ‘Single cell RNA sequencing of retinal immune cells identifies an activation of resident retinal microglia associated with sub-retinal pseudodrusen-like deposits.’

Welcome Dr. Zawaydeh

Welcome to Dr Qais Zawaydeh joins the laboratory. Qais is a physician who will be assisting us with both laboratory research, as our new research assistant, and with clinical research as we build our clinical trial programs.
